There may be several new faces in the three largest Burnett County municipalities this April, and several new faces on local school boards, as several current trustees and members are up for either reelection or are leaving their seats open. Any current village trustee not seeking reelection was required to submit a Notification of Non-Candidacy form, which was due no later than Dec. 21.
Offices up for election this spring in the non-partisan race includes Circuit Court judges, state Appellate Court judges, and one justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
The Spring Election is being held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, and also includes specific municipal and school district races. Primary elections, if needed, will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Siren Village Boardmembers up for reelection this coming spring include village president, Dave Alden, as well as trustees Rick Engstrom, Janet Hunter, and Sara Reimann. The Siren Village caucus is being held on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 2 pm, with the results shared next week.
Webster’s Village Boardtrustees up for reelection include Village President, Jeff Roberts and Trustees Tim Maloney, Aaron Sears, and Charlie Weis. The Webster village caucus is being held shortly after press time on Weds., Jan. 11 at 5:45 p.m. The results will also be brought forth next week.
Grantsburg’s Village Boardtrustees up for reelection include village president Terry Kucera, along with trustees Diane Barton, Hank Java, and Kayla Woody. However, trustee Woody has chosen not to seek reelection, and no other candidates filed for the seat in time to be listed on the official ballot.
According to village clerk/treasurer Sheila Meyer, a potential candidate can run as an official write-in, although they will not be listed on the ballot, they can campaign as an official write-in candidate, as long as their candidacy declaration is made by noon on the previous Friday before the election, which would be on Friday, March 31.
School boards
In school board races, there are several races and seats up for grabs, but also some news on a proposal that fell by the wayside:
Siren- The Siren school board had a somewhat unique issue, as the board had originally hoped to reduce their members from the current seven members, but that proposal died due to a lack of public support or signatures.
“So, we will stay a seven-member board,” stated administrative assistant Lisa Seaman.
Three incumbents are up for reelection: James Kopecky, Jamie Thompson, and Katie Tewalt.
However, Kopecky chose not to seek a new term.
One other person has submitted papers for the vacant seat, Tom Porter, and he will join Thompson and Tewalt on the April ballot, with the ballot order just being confirmed shortly before press time: 1. Tom Porter, 2. Jamie Thompson, 3. Katie Tewalt, with voters choosing no more than three of the three candidates.
Webster- Three current board members are seeking a return to their seats: Bob Carlson, Chaz Heinz and Terry Larsen. One person has also sought a seat and will also be on the ballot in April: Galina Werdier. The three candidates with the most votes will fill the seats.
Grantsburg- The Board of Education has two incumbent board members seeking a return to their seats: Brian Handy and Jason Burkman. Both are running again as incumbents, and there are no other candidates.
