Grantsburg’s new police chief is set to dig in in just a few weeks, and he’ll have a sidekick. Deputy Mitchell Olson, who currently works as a Burnett County Sheriff’s deputy, will be joining the village force in the coming weeks, as will his K9 officer ‘Tracker,’ who has been in service in Burnett County since June of 2017.
Olson is slated to start his new position later this month, as he winds down his time with the BCSO.
It’s a unique twist that Tracker is coming with Chief Olson, and that he’s part of the deal, with the village essentially purchasing the canine officer from the county, at a pro-rated price.
Sheriff Tracy Finch said she was excited for Dep. Olson and Tracker, and said they will do great in the position.
“Yes, the dog will go with him,” Sheriff Finch said, adding that both Olson and Tracker will still be available to assist the county, when needed, as part of the agreement. “Once a canine handler, always a canine handler!”
While the sheriff lamented the loss of both Dep. Olson and Tracker to the BCSO, she was adamant about how the village of Grantsburg made the right choice:
“Mitch is going to be great in that position!” Finch added. “We’re very happy for him, very proud of him.”
Olson will replace retired Police Chief Dan Wald, who is using up banked vacation time, but had a retirement event last month.
