SUPERIOR – A shot at winning a season series and any realistic shot at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title escaped the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets, including Webster’s Jenna Curtis, entered Saturday’s matchup with UW-River Falls with a four-game win streak that started with their second game against the Falcons this season. But a 3-0 loss stopped the streak and left UW-Superior with four games remaining in the regular season.

UW-Superior extended its streak to four games with a 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 4. All four goals in the game were scored in the second period, starting with one from Kaylee Wood to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

Amber Heidenreich added a shorthanded goal to make it a 2-0 lead near the midway point of the period. St. Scholastica got on the board late in the period but Kaleigh Martinson soon answered that with another goal for UW-Superior.

The win improved the Yellowjackets’ record to 13-5-1 overall on the season though the 14th win eluded them at home against UW-River Falls.

UW-Superior failed to score on either of its power plays in Saturday’s game while UW-River Falls converted on two of its three chances with a skater advantage. The Falcons outshot the Yellowjackets 39-24 in the game, though Curtis did win 15 of the 18 faceoffs she was part of.

UW-Superior goes to UW-Stevens Point for a pair of games this weekend and plays three games next week to conclude the regular season. The Yellowjackets entered the week with a 13-6-1 overall record and they dropped to 3-5 in the WIAC.
