BALDWIN – The WIAA Division 2 sectional at Pheasant Hills Golf Course was one fit for freshmen.
Caitlin Tollefson – the lone sectional qualifier from the Grantsburg girls golf team – was one of six first-year varsity players to reach the Oct. 8 tournament. And those freshmen made their mark.
While Tollefson ended her first sectional with a 115 to tie for 34th on the individual leaderboard, Prescott’s Ava Salay put a freshman atop the leaderboard with an 84 to win the sectional by two strokes. Ellsworth’s Holly Carlson (86), Northwestern’s Kiernan Smith (87) and Somerset’s Haley Myers (88) were the three seniors trying to catch Salay but had to settle for top-5 finishes and transfer spots to the state final.
Prescott also topped the team standings with a 390 while St. Croix Central (395) earned the second and final team transfer spot to the final.
Tollefson was the only freshman in the field to qualify as an individual and of that group of eight, she had the second-best front-nine score. She had a 54 through the first nine, but nearly each golfer in the field had a tougher time on the back nine.
The difficult second half did drop Tollefson slightly on the leaderboard with a 61, but put her in a tie for 34th with fellow freshman – Julia Corbin of Spooner. The two were four strokes from earning top-25 finishes and 27 strokes from reaching one of the transfer spots to the state final.
