Pirates survive against Saints

Grantsburg’s Ellie Duncan ‘flys’ in safely at third in the win over SCF on Tuesday night.

GRANTSBURG—Despite some very uncharacteristic fielding errors and base-running blunders, the Grantsburg Pirates softball team survived and was able to pull off a 10-7 win over the visiting St. Croix Falls Saints on Tuesday to keep their undefeated conference record intact.

After one complete inning of play the game was knotted up at 3-3, but the Saints took a 5-3 lead after two.

The Pirates rallied back in the third, tacking on three runs with hits from Emma Quimby, Brooke Quimby and Susan Roberts to put their team back on top, 6-5.

The Saints answered in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 7-6, but it was short lived as the hometown girls added three runs in their half of the inning with Ellie Duncan, Jenna McNally and Emma Quimby crossing the plate to go up 9-7.

The Pirates added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 10-7 win.

Savanna Trittelwitz was in the circle and got the win for the Pirates, recording nine strikeouts on the night.
