Pirates beat Bulldogs, headed to Regional final

Grantsburg’s second baseman Emma Quimby makes a throw to first for an out in Tuesday’s win over Chetek-Weyerhauser.

GRANTSBURG—The Grantsburg Pirates softball team hosted the Chetek-Weyerhauser Bulldogs Tuesday night in Regional semi-final action with the Pirates coming away with a 6-2 victory.

The win sends them to the Regional championship game Thursday night where they will look to add another line to the already impressive list of titles won by the Grantsburg fastpitch program.

They have 16 Regional plaques and look to bring home number seventeen when they host a familiar face – the Chequamegon Screaming Eagles.

Tuesday’s game against the Bulldogs started a little slow offensively for the Pirates as they fell behind early, trailing 0-1 at the end of two full innings of play.

Grantsburg tied it up in the third inning when Susan Roberts reached on a walk and eventually scored on a single by Rylee Hoffman.

They took a 3-2 lead after four innings of play. Jenna McNally used her speed to beat the throw to first to get things started. She stole second to move into scoring position. Brooke Quimby cracked a shot to right field for a double, scoring McNally.

Quimby later scored on a single by Roberts to take the lead.

The Pirates added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning to make it a 6-2 game.

The Bulldogs threatened to rally back in the top of the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs, but the Pirate defense stood strong and shut them down, stranding their runners on the bags.

Grantsburg’s defense held in the seventh as well to end the game at 6-2.

Hoffman was in the circle for the Pirates, going the distance facing 31 batters while striking out eight.

The Regional championship is Thursday at 5:00 in Grantsburg against number four seeded Chequamegon.
