The Pirates were set and ready to take on Spring Valley in the WIAA playoffs on Friday when the team received crushing news. Their season was ending because of a positive test from the team they played last week.
The team defeated the Durand Panthers on Friday night 38-30 and were set to play Spring Valley next to advance through the playoffs.
Grantsburg head coach Adam Hale told the Sentinel a player for Durand tested positive on Saturday, “meaning most of our team was exposed to him and now is quarantined.”
Hale said it is disappointing to have to end the season like this, but he is proud of the team that worked together throughout the season.
“I'm very proud of our guys and the season they put together despite the uncertainty week to week of everything going on,” Hale said. “I want to thank our senior class of Simon Bunting, Carter Johnson, Matt Kotke, Derek Lee, Ike Lee, Sterling McKinley and Jared VanWatermeulen for their hard work, dedication and leadership to Grantsburg Football over the past four years. They've been a terrific group of young men to coach.”
