DANBURY – The Grantsburg boys cross country team snagged a pair of top-5 individual finishes in the James Muus Invitational at Sand Green Country Club on Sept. 10.

Chase Doornink and Will Gerber finished back-to-back in third and fourth for the Pirates, while their three scored teammates had top-20 finishes to give Grantsburg a runner-up finish in the team standings. The Pirates finished with 56 points while Clear Lake had three top-10 finishers to win the event with 42 points. Unity (67) was third, followed by St. Croix Falls (84), Birchwood (113), Shell Lake (160) and Webster (194).

Doornink had the Pirates’ best finish, placing third with a time of 17 minutes, 46.38 seconds and Gerber (17:54.09) was less than eight seconds behind in fifth. Both were within a minute of Birchwood’s Matthew Marcinske, who won the event in 17:15.15.

Brody Bongaarts (19:15.12) added a 14th-place finish for Grantsburg; Jordan Janes (19:50.69) was 16th and Connor DeTienne (20:27.81) was 19th. Mason Arnold (21:08.56) was 26th and Owen Rathje (22:12.53) was 39th as the Pirates’ additional runners with top-40 finishes.

Webster was led by a top-25 finish from Edwin Janssen, who placed 21st with a time of 20:57.47. Caleb Smith (23:51.84) was 54th; Sam Smith (25:26.84) was 67th; Brandon Petersen (28:38.78) was 75th and A.J. Flatten (29:47.22) was 76th.

Girls CC

Grantsburg put two runners in the top-10 of the girls division of the James Muus Invitational and earned another runner-up finish for the Pirates.

Ayla Meyer and Alexis Slater finished back-to-back in ninth and 10th, leading the Pirates to a point total of 44 while Unity (30) put four of its five scored runners in the top 20 to earn the team win. St. Croix Falls (82) was third with Clear Lake in fourth (85) and Webster (110) was fifth.

Meyer finished in 24:30.15 to place ninth on the individual board with Slater (24:30.62) less than a half-second behind in 10th. Cassidy Troff (25:53.81) was 20th; Savanna Trittelwitz (25:58.03) was 21st and Tristin Kreuser-Peterson (26:35.15) was 27th.

Emily Doriott was less than three seconds from giving Webster a top-25 finisher; she was 26th in 26:32.44. Jenna Gomulak (26:38.31) was 29th; Felicity Lamb (27:50.47) was 35th; Grace McCool (28:34.75) was 37th and Dahlia Dorn (31:56.38) was 46th.
