WEBSTER – Ayla Meyer and the Grantsburg girls cross country team will follow their quality finishes in last Thursday’s Lakeland Conference Meet into this Saturday’s WIAA sectional at Northland Pines Golf Course.

Meyer was fourth in the conference meet with a time of 21 minutes, 42.62 seconds, about 26 seconds off the pace set by 1st-place finisher Natalie Kreier (21:16.34) of Clear Lake. Meyer’s finish helped the Pirates compete with Unity for the team win, but the Eagles (51) finished with a 10-point advantage over Grantsburg (61). Webster (114) finished sixth.

Alexis Slater (22:49.75) was 14th for the Pirates; Tristin Kreuser-Peterson (23:36.62) was 16th; Savanna Trittelwitz (25:13.12) was 30th and Hope McKinley (25:15.62) was 31st. Belle Quimby (25:21.72) was 32nd and Alex Kammeyer (29:54.18) was 46th as Grantsburg’s additional runners.

Jenna Gomulak led the Tigers with a 17th-place finish in 24:02.34. Emily Doriott (24:58.84) was 26th; Felicity Lamb (25:23.75) was 34th; Grace McCool (28:16.18) was 43rd and Dahlia Dorn (29:17.15) was 45th. Arwen Gustafson was Webster’s additional runner, finishing 54th in 47:45.72.

Saturday’s sectional is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and includes conference-meet winning Unity and Shell Lake, which had two top-5 finishers in the conference meet.

Boys CC

The Grantsburg and Webster boys cross country teams had a week to prepare for this Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional at Northland Pines Golf Course.

Both teams concluded the regular season in Thursday’s Lakeland Conference Meet at Sand Greens Country Club, where the Pirates had top-5 individual and team finishes. Will Gerber led the Pirates with a 4th-place finish in 17 minutes, 12.53 seconds while the team finished with 75 points to place third overall; Webster was eighth with 204 points.

Gerber was roughly 42 seconds off the pace set by Birchwood’s Matthew Marcinske, who won the event in 16:30.84 as the lone runner to finish in less than 17 minutes. Clear Lake (50) put four of its runners in the top 20 to top the team standings with Unity (55) in second. Brody Bongaarts gave Grantsburg a second top-10 finisher, placing ninth in 18:08.22. Connor DeTienne (18:28.75) was 13th; Jordan Janes (18:39.69) was 15th and Owen Rathje (20:57.88) was 39th. Mason Arnold (21:06.22) was 41st and Donevan Benson (22:05.31) was 49th as the Pirates’ additional runners.

Caleb Smith led the Tigers with a 30th-place finish in 20:11.78; Edwin Janssen (20:21.5) was 33rd; Sam Smith (22:58.25) was 66th; Chris Rollins (23:18.94) was 67th and Danny Ingalls (23:44.59) was 71st. Brandon Petersen (23:45.59) was 72nd; A.J. Flatten (26:55.34) was 79th and Jef Janssen (34:54.15) was 83rd as the Tigers’ additional runners.

Saturday’s sectional is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.; Grantsburg and Webster will be joined by fellow Lakeland foes Birchwood, Unity and Shell Lake. The top two teams will advance from the sectional to the state final along with the first five individual finishers whose teams are not advancing.
