Hayward Hurricanes goalie Emma Quimby helped the team get a shutout victory in their first game of the season.

MOSINEE – A shutout was the best shot at getting the season’s first win.

Grantsburg’s Emma Quimby got that shutout in the Hayward Hurricanes’ net on Friday, leading the girls hockey team to a 1-0 win over University School in the Gobbler Cup Tournament. She rejected all eight Wildcats’ shot in the win while Alex Pieterek scored the game’s lone goal.

Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, they were on the other end of a shutout decision in their second game of the tournament, on Saturday. Central Wisconsin scored first- and third-period goals and outshot the Hurricanes 28-11 in a 2-0 win. Quimby made 26 saves for Hayward.

The Hurricanes officially started their season on Nov. 25 at Proctor-Hermantown and though Quimby finished with 30 saves, the Mirage still won handily 8-1. Soile Doyle had the Hurricanes’ lone goal.

Hayward is scheduled to play at Duluth Marshall on Thursday and St. Croix Valley on Friday.
