MARSHFIELD – The Hayward girls co-op hockey team can close the regular season with a four-game win streak this Thursday.
The Hurricanes and Grantsburg’s Emma Quimby enter this week’s road game at Chippewa Falls-Menomonie after back-to-back wins last week stretched their win streak to three and evened their overall record at 11-11-2.
Quimby made 13 saves for Hayward in its 7-3 win over Superior on Feb. 11. Riley Sprenger scored two first-period goals and after starting the second period with a 2-1 win, the Hurricanes added five unanswered goals to take control of the game. Alex Pieterek, Taylor Eytcheson and Jerzy Petit scored one goal each while Lily Pergolski had two.
The Hurricanes needed overtime to get a 3-2 win over Wisconsin Valley Union on Thursday. Soile Doyle and Eytcheson scored goals for Hayward, which took a 2-0 lead into the third period. But, Wisconsin Valley scored two power play goals in the third period to force overtime.
On a Hurricanes’ power play, Pergolski scored with assists from Eytcheson and Kennedy Sprenger to get the win. Quimby finished with 21 saves for Hayward, which finished with a 38-23 advantage in shots.
A win this Thursday not only extends Hayward’s win streak to four games, but allows the team to finish the regular season with a winning record. The teams had one prior meeting this season that ended with a 6-5 win for Chippewa Falls-Menomonie in December.
