New deer management plan outlined. Board also approved moving the recycling center.
A controlled deer hunt within the Grantsburg Village limits began in 2004 after a village referendum vote was approved. They'll do it again this year, with a new plan in force.
The idea is to reduce the deer population in the village limits. The deer are removed by bow hunters selected by the village board. Each hunter undergoes a background check by the village police department.
The hunters sign a waiver releasing the village and property owners from liability.
No hunting takes place on private property without consent of the property owners.
Tags are obtained from the DNR and hunters can shoot only antler-less deer from a raised platform of a minimum of 10 feet. All shots should be within 20 yards of the deer stand.
The police department is used to help maintain a safe hunt.
The village board said the hunt will begin soon and they extended the deer harvest to January 6, 2009.
IN OTHER action the board:
•Decided not to proceed with an agreement between the village and Dan Michaels to operate at the village airport. Michaels indicated he has found a different airport at which to operate. The village planned to trade maintenance of the airport for space and Michaels was hoping to add income to the airport through gasoline sales and other methods.
•Approved a request by Rick Schneider, director of the Recycling Control Commission of Burnett and Washburn Counties to allow the recycling center to be located off Benson Road at the site that has been the waste transfer station.
"The building that presently houses the Grantsburg recycling center (on Brad Sgtreet) is scheduled to be torn down in the Spring of 2009," said Schneider.
He said there was ample room at the new site.
Schneider said garbage would not be accepted at the site and cleanup of dumped materials would be the responsibility of the Recycling Control Commission.
He also told the board, "We will accept the same list of materials that are presently collected at the Brad Street location and will arrange to move the" oil collection tank" to the new site.
•Approved a permit for Burnett Medical Center for a garage at the site of the current facility.
