Grantsburg man heads to trial on sexual assault charge

SIREN—A Grantsburg man pleaded not guilty to one charge of repeated sexual assault to a child during an arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Burnett County Circuit Court.

Charles E. Smith, 41, is accused of three or more sexual assault incidents of the same child between January 2003 and January 2007.

The victim has since moved to Florida, but in a taped interview, she alleged Smith assaulted her multiple times when her mother left the house to go to work.

She also said Smith threatened her not to tell anyone what he was doing.

Smith had originally been charged with two counts of repeated sexual assault, but one count was dismissed during his preliminary hearing.

Defense attorney Ken Davis said his client was requesting a jury trial in the matter. The next court date is scheduled for November.

Smith continues to be free on $5,000 cash bond plus he must have no unsupervised contact with children under 18. By Todd Beckmann, Sentinel News Editor.
