Finally fixing Highway 87
By Todd Beckmann

With the kids safely back in school, motorists may believe road construction is wrapped up for the season.

Not so.

Starting on Monday, Sept. 8, the Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing Highway 87 from near Cushing to the stoplights at Highway 70 in Grantsburg.

“A crew will begin milling off the old asphalt starting at 270th Ave. and working north toward County Road Z,” the DOT’s Bob Andewrson explained.

“Then, weather permitting, a crew will begin paving south from Z on Wednesday or Thursday of next week while the milling continues north,” he continued. “It will be a muiltiple operations project.”

Anderson said all the work will be done “under traffic,” meaning the road will be open to traffic while the work progresses.

“There will be flagmen directing traffic,” he said.

If all goes well and the project is not hampered too much by bad weather, Anderson said the project should wrap up by mid to late October.

Smaller projects this fall include County Road N west of Cushing and Highway 35 between Frederic and Luck.
