Man killed in rock quarry rollover
By Kyle Weaver
Christopher Cotteleer, 21, of Dresser, was killed after his 1996 Geo Metro rolled over at least twice in the Dresser Trap Rock Quarry. Submitted photo

A 21-year-old Dresser man was killed and two others were injured July 20 in a motor vehicle crash in the Dresser Trap Rock Quarry.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Department press release, the driver, Christopher Cotteleer, was engaged in “aggressive and purposely erratic driving” and lost control of his vehicle, a 1996 Geo Metro, which rolled at least twice. Cotteleer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two of Cotteleer’s passengers, Kyle Hawkins, 21, of St. Croix Falls, and Ryan Kennedy, 21, of Osceola suffered significant injuries. Hawkins was air lifted to Regions Hospital and treated for head injuries and a severed ear. Kennedy was transported to Osceola Medical Center for head and collarbone injuries, the release states.

Two other passengers, Ivan “Max” Bowen, 21 and Jonathan Jasperson, 22, both of Dresser, were not injured in the crash.

None of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts, the release states.

Though the accident happened on private property, there was apparently no trespassing involved, as Bowen is the son of quarry owner Ivan Bowen, said Polk County Sheriff Tim Moore.

Moore said he was not able to identify a trend with the incident.

“I just think that more and more this age group is into extreme sports,” Moore said. “This may be one of them.”

My heart and prayers go out to everyone, my brother is Ryan Kennedy, I am beside myself my at this event, and more for the family of the driver I am so sorry for your loss, and to Ryan you are my baby brother, there is never a day that goes by that I do not miss you and think of you, I will be there soon to see you through your recovery process!

I also hope that anyone who reads this can LEARN from this tragic event that weather your 5 or 15 or 21 or 55 that seat belts are made and enforced for a reason, please always wear your seat belt! IF seat belts would have been used then maybe this accident would NOT have ended in tragedy.. Again I feel for the loss of Cotteleer family, my prayers are with you and your family.

I love you Ryan Kennedy, you are and always will be my baby brother.

My prayers are with my nephew Ryan, be strong bud and get well soon !!! We love you!!!! God be with the family of the driver, no one should have to go throught something like this, it is a horrible tragedy.
