Evan McKee (left) and Mason Getts both received first place at the SkillsUSA state competition and qualified for the national competition in Kentucky at the end of June.

In their second trip to the State competition, the Webster SkillsUSA team returned with two national qualifiers in Evan McKee and Mason Getts. Monday night, the Webster school board approved their trip to the National competition in Kentucky at the end of June.

SkillsUSA is a national program providing opportunity for high school students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. This was the second year Webster had sent students to the competition.

McKee and Getts along with their teacher, Ron Dorn, made a presentation at the school board meeting Monday night to recap parts of the competition. Getts was competing in the power equipment technology category and McKee in the CNC Specialist category.

Dorn said it was quite an accomplishment for Getts to get first place and the gold medal because he is a freshman.

“Most of the kids in these categories are juniors and seniors,” Dorn said. “It’s rare to even see a freshman compete or even win. It’s very impressive.”
