Burnett County District Attorney (DA) James Rennicke is handling Burnett County while Dan Steffen is on administrative leave.

Steffen, the assistant district attorney (ADA) for Burnett County, is charged with three felony counts of capturing an intimate representation. Steffen was placed on administrative leave by the state.

The Sentinel contacted the DA’s office and was told the state makes the decision on whether Steffen’s administrative leave is paid or not.

DA Rennicke was on leave due to shoulder surgery, according to the DA’s office. He was back in court via Zoom last Thursday.

The DA’s office was expecting Rennicke to be back working in the office this week.

Rennicke is prosecuting the majority of cases in Burnett County while Steffen is on administrative leave.

Steffen’s case has been filed in Polk County because alleged videotaping of sex partners took place at Steffen’s home in Osceola. He has not yet been booked in Polk County.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) released a press release on the charges brought against Steffen and stated Assistant Attorney General David Maas is prosecuting the case.
