Hunting still reigns supreme in Burnett County. Last weekend hunters of all ages and all backgrounds went out hoping to get that prize buck.
However, almost 1,000 deer have already been harvested this year by hunters.
According to the WDNR (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources), 994 deer were harvested during the first three seasons; archery, crossbow and youth hunt.
During the youth hunt just under 100 deer were harvested. Over the first weekend in October hunters in Burnett County harvested 59 antlered deer and 39 antlerless for a total of 98 deer over the two-day season.
Archery and crossbow season began in September and almost 900 deer have been harvested by those hunters.
Since Sept. 14 hunters in Burnett County have harvested 499 deer with crossbow and 397 with archery.
The numbers from opening weekend of rifle season were not available at print time but will be featured in next week’s edition of the Sentinel.
