There was a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 70 at the intersection of County Highway H Wednesday morning. Both drivers were airlifted to Minnesota following the accident for injuries sustained in the accident.

Jonathan M. Schmitz, 43, Shell Lake, was operating 1994 GMC dump truck northbound on County Highway H. Richard F. Stelling, 56, Spooner was operating a 2007 Peterbilt well drilling truck, westbound on State Highway 70.

According to the sheriff’s office, Schmitz failed to yield to traffic while entering State Highway 70 and was struck by Stelling. Stelling’s vehicle flipped onto the passenger side blocking most of State Highway 70.

Deputies from the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office, Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, Spooner Fire Department, St. Croix Hertel Fire Department and the Burnett County Highway Department responded.

North Ambulance Service, North Memorial Health Air Care Helicopter and Life Link Emergency Air Ambulance responded to the scene. Both vehicle operators were transported, via helicopter, to hospitals in Minnesota for treatment of their injuries. At the time of this release, no information on the condition of either driver is available.

Anderson Towing of Grantsburg with assistance from S and R towing of Cameron assisted in removing the wreckage and debris from the highway.

The accident remains under investigation by the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
