51 bears were trapped in Burnett County in 2020. A majority of them were trapped in corn fields after farmers reported crop damage.
Deer and bear caused over $40,000 of damage across the county last year, most of the crop damage was corn but there was also a claim for damaged soybeans and alfalfa.
Of the 51 bears, 26 were trapped in corn fields, 20 were trapped due to health and human safety concerns, four were trapped due to pets and one bear was trapped for livestock purposes.
Cindy Blonk of Land Services told the Natural Resources committee the four bear trapped for pet reasons wasn’t because the bear was a pet but bears were harassing resident pets, like cats and dogs.
Along with the bear there were also 43 deer shot using permit tags last year from four farmers across the county.
Also in 2020, there was almost 500 pounds of venison donated to food shelves in Burnett County. Lock and Load in Grantsburg processed nine deer and Block and Cleaver in Siren processed another four deer.
