Alan W. Byers, 43, Grantsburg, was given a ten-year sentence for repeated sexual assault of a child. He will serve three years in state prison and then seven years in extended supervision.

Byers pleaded guilty to one count of repeated sexual assault of a child, a class C Felony, in March and had his sentencing hearing earlier this month.

Online court records show Judge Dan Tolan presided over the sentencing.

There will be a restitution hearing in the future to cover the cost of therapy for the victim. He is now a convicted felon and may not possess a firearm.

Tolan also said Byers now must register as a sex offender for life and must comply with all sex offender registry requirements.

According to the criminal complaint, in August, detectives had just begun reviewing Byers’ case after speaking with the victim’s mother when he showed up at the Sheriff’s Department lobby, saying, “I did something bad.”

When the detective and a social worker interviewed Byers, he was very tense and spoke slowly. He explained that it began when the juvenile pulled his pants down and touched his penis.

Byers said she initiated it, but he did not stop her, and said it happened numerous times. He also said that he was “not right in the head.”
